My Boat to Bainbridge,  written and performed by Matt Smith and directed by Bret Fetzer, is a 70-minute monologue about a man’s resistance to leaving his hometown (Seattle) for a place with a better public school system for his kids. It’s also the story of a man’s eccentric relationship with his dog.

Unexpected Productions, the premiere improv theatre in the Northwest, introduces its new Friday night slot “Deja Me” with a long run of Matt Smith, Friday nights only, at 8:00pm.  This is a glorious homecoming for Matt Smith, who began his performance career with Seattle TheatreSports and served as Artistic Director of the company in 1986.

Matt’s solo works include: My Last Year with the Nuns, Helium, and Beyond Kindness.   Matt will be performing these shows later in the year. Matt and Edward Sampson were the legendary 2-person theatre company Stark/Raving Theatre.  He was also a member of Seattle Improv and None of the Above.

“Fridays only” suits Matt well because he is a celebrated fundraising auctioneer and spends his Saturday nights engaging that passion.  He teaches improvisation at Seattle University and Freehold, and works days as a corporate trainer, applying the discipline of improvisation to the work environment.

“Smith’s may be the only solo act I can remember in which I felt that the performer didn’t care what was thought of him as long as the stories got through. I can pay no higher compliment to both writer and performer.”

Time Out - New York

“ (Smith) - offers proof that he is an accomplished solo actor-provocateur, with a rare gift for merging humor with keen self (and social) awareness.”

The Seattle Times

“Let all would-be solo performers come study at the feet of Smith."

The Seattle Weekly

“Smith’s performance demonstrates his mastery of storytelling, accented with a generous dollop of superb comic timing.”
